Portion Size and Weight Loss

As we all know, one of the key elements to a successful weight loss diet is ensuring that the person consumes less food. This is easier said than done because most of us enjoy delicious food. One of the mistakes that people make is to increase their portion size way above what one would normally expect. The increase in portion size is not a drastic change but something that gradually takes root until the person can not envisage them without a huge portion of food that they eventually eat up. They comfort themselves with a view to going to the gym to burn off the food but somehow they never seem to succeed.

The portions rise but there is no alternative method for getting rid of all those calories. The net effect is an unprecedented weight gain that can threaten the health of that individual and seriously limit their social life and ability to enjoy the little leisure time that they have. Parents have a responsibility in terms of letting the growth in portion size to go without hindrance. Some parents believe that they are showing the children love by giving them impossibly large portion sizes. This is never a good idea because it plays right into the hands of the natural desire for food. Someone then gets used to these huge portions and will develop the habit throughout their lifetime without a hint of remorse or shame.
The adult will even increase the portions as their size grows because the stomach will be demanding more and more. Even when the body indicates to them that it is satisfied, they will continue in their quest to gorge as much food as possible.

The end result is that they will either die of diabetes or suffer from some other fat related disease. The culture within which the person is living can also mean that they never get the chance to reduce their portion size. Some cultures revere weight and will not say a negative word against someone who is piling on the pounds.
Culture makes us who we are. If we are brought up in a home that serves large portions then it is likely that we will pass on this habit to our children and grand children. The belief that culture is the most influencing factor in weight gain has some credibility because often one family will have similar weight patterns. Although this can be explained away be genes, it is also quite clear that the portion sizes have a role to play.
