Portion Size and Weight Loss

4:41 AM Alan Bracken

As we all know, one of the key elements to a successful weight loss diet is ensuring that the person consumes less food. This is easier said than done because most of us enjoy delicious food. One of the mistakes that people make is to increase their portion size way above what one would normally expect. The increase in portion size is not a drastic change but something that gradually takes root until the person can not envisage them without a huge portion of food that they eventually eat up. They comfort themselves with a view to going to the gym to burn off the food but somehow they never seem to succeed.

The portions rise but there is no alternative method for getting rid of all those calories. The net effect is an unprecedented weight gain that can threaten the health of that individual and seriously limit their social life and ability to enjoy the little leisure time that they have. Parents have a responsibility in terms of letting the growth in portion size to go without hindrance. Some parents believe that they are showing the children love by giving them impossibly large portion sizes. This is never a good idea because it plays right into the hands of the natural desire for food. Someone then gets used to these huge portions and will develop the habit throughout their lifetime without a hint of remorse or shame.
The adult will even increase the portions as their size grows because the stomach will be demanding more and more. Even when the body indicates to them that it is satisfied, they will continue in their quest to gorge as much food as possible.

The end result is that they will either die of diabetes or suffer from some other fat related disease. The culture within which the person is living can also mean that they never get the chance to reduce their portion size. Some cultures revere weight and will not say a negative word against someone who is piling on the pounds.
Culture makes us who we are. If we are brought up in a home that serves large portions then it is likely that we will pass on this habit to our children and grand children. The belief that culture is the most influencing factor in weight gain has some credibility because often one family will have similar weight patterns. Although this can be explained away be genes, it is also quite clear that the portion sizes have a role to play.

Fat Retention as a Survival Technique

We all require certain amount of body fat in live without major diseases and nutritional deficiencies. This is true regardless of gender and affiliation or race. The fat acts as insulation and storage mechanism for energy reserves. Without the presence of fat our bodies cannot function properly. We would lack energy because we are not creating reserves during times of plenty. If we lived in a cold climate then we would be very uncomfortable due to the lack of insulation against the elements. This is clearly a list of reasons why the body cannot do without fat. It therefore makes no sense whatsoever to suggest that in order to lose weight, all fat consumption must completely stop. That is what some of our most popular diets advocate.

Whereas the majority of methods of losing weight that are employed these days involve safe methods but often all that good work is spoilt by the addition of unsafe methods such as pills, drugs that induce vomiting, drugs that induce uncontrolled diarrhea and general starvation. These methods might bring about weight loss in the short term but ultimately they will damage your health so badly that it will no longer be worth it to continue on those schemes. The best way to deal with weight issues is to have some changes in your lifestyle and look at the people around you. Eating a controlled diet is not a bad thing as long as you do not become obsessed with it to the extent that you lose all reason and a sense of proportion and self control.

You must also remember that as you starve your body of fat, you may be starving yourself of other nutrients that are vital for your well being. Of course people can decide to eat fruit until they start to lose weight. The problem with this strategy is that it assumes that human beings do not have cravings of nice things. That is so far off the truth. Fatty foods tend to taste better than non fatty foods unless you have a very good level of self discipline. The cravings will come and the diet will go straight out of the window.

While the end goal of losing weight is something that you want you don't want to stuff yourself full of artificial nutrients that may harm you in the long run. Extended dieting even naturally can be harmful to your body. When you diet you need to set a target weight for yourself and simply reduce your intake and increase your activity. When you reach this target weight stop and take a look at yourself.

Is it Possible to have a Wheat Grain Free Diet?

12:07 AM Alan Bracken

It has become fashionable in some circles to take wheat out of the diet. Apparently wheat and wheat products are some of the major causes of health problems for the public. Although I am somewhat skeptical about this view, I never the less take time to read what people are saying about it on the internet. Recently I landed on this article where a writer was giving quite stringent advice as to how to completely remove this foodstuff from the diet. I will share some of the things that they were writing about.

Apparently the removal of wheat from the diet not only improves the diet but also affects the general wellbeing of the person. Apparently it helps to reduce weight and deals with heart problems. How this happens I am not entirely sure but the author seems convinced that it actually does happen and that we should all leave the wheat out of our food. The wheat free diet does not necessarily mean the elimination of carbohydrates. In fact its proponents argue that the diet is very rich in carbohydrates as it allows the users to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables as a supplement for the wheat element in their normal diet.

The diet operates on a principle that it aims to reduce the amount of people take by curing their addiction to food. The addiction to food is blamed for the rise in obesity and the difficulty in sticking to diets. Apparently the diet requires a lot of commitment before it is executed because it will take the person away from the comfort zone of their normal eating habits and cause them to evaluate everything that they know about diets and their own bodies.

The users are advised to stock up with good quality produce before beginning the diet because it creates hunger pangs. The satisfaction of these hunger pangs is not a problem as long as it is satisfied with the non-what items such as fruit and vegetables. This programs the mind to expect that when it is time to eat, wheat will not feature.

The diet requires quite a lot of commitment from the user because they will be expected to understand the exact composition of the food they ingest and will have to take a keen interest in dieting matters as well as reading all the labels on foodstuffs.
